Norbert Neiger (elder brother) commenced a jewellery company in the basement of his family home in the early 20th Century after graduating from jewellery design college. After his initial success, his younger brother Max joined him in the business. Norbert ran the business and Max designed the jewellery and ran the workshop.
Neiger pieces are characterised by beautiful Czech glass and intricate, delicate metal parts. Their best known works derive from the Egyptian design craze that began after the opening of King Tut's tomb in 1922. They also added other fanciful lines, with Chinese and Indian motifs. As a contrast to the bold figural themes, they also produced exquisitely delicate pieces
They rarely stamped their products which makes it problematic for the novice collector to identify them with certainty. Furthermore, local jewellery makers emulated their work although they lacked the workmanship or style of the authentic Neiger pieces.
Sadly, the Neiger brothers came to a tragic end. When WWII began they moved their operations to Bohemia, thinking it would be safe. It was not. They were ultimately sent to Auschwitz during WWII and both died there. Nowadays, Neiger Bros pieces are extremely popular and command high prices - surely a testament to their workmanship and the enduring appeal of their designs.
The purple and green glass beads and pendant glass piece are all in good condition with no major breaks, cracks, or chips to them. There are small amounts of verdigris and dulling on the brass chain that could be easily removed with a proper cleaning. I prefer for the patina to remain but the new owner can decide what suits them.
This item was sourced from a long standing collector of Neiger Bros jewellery.
