    Robe de Style

The French couturier Jeanne Lanvin is credited with resurrecting the classic wide-skirted 18th Century gowns and bringing it up to date to suit the tastes of fashionable 1920s women. The robe de style featured a close fit bodice and a longer, fuller skirt. In fact, some of the skirts were so full that they required side petticoats, panniers, or hoops.  The overall fullness of the dress worked well for just about any age or figure. This made it a good option both for the younger ladies of the Jazz Age, who were too young for the flapper craze, as well as, ironically, their mothers who may have preferred a style that was more forgiving.

Silk taffeta, velvet, satin, and a sheer lightweight fabric called organdy were common for the elegant robes de style. In 1921-1923 day, and afternoon versions of the robe de style were seen on trend alongside the straight chemise dresses. The day versions were less full at the hip without the need for padded undergarments. Fullness was added to the hips with ruffles, pleats, apron treatments and layers of net or tulle. The waistband was very wide and did not always sit at the low waist but at the natural or even empire line, the hem was always long often nearing the ankle line. The style remained in vogue until the late 1930s, when the advent of WW2, and its restrictions on fabric, caused the silhouette to become outmoded.

    Comment

This is a fabulous and very rare, early 1920s dress - worthy of a museum. It is in great condition for its age with some minor flaws including some pinholes to fabric, missing hooks and eyes in a couple of places, wear to silk ribbon, some unravelling of thread near waist. There is a little bit of damage to the internal lining which has a couple of small tears but this cannot be seen from front and could be repaired.

We are more than happy to answer any inquires about this item or to negotiate a mutually agreeable lay-by arrangement.  If you are looking for something that you don't currently find in our shop - drop us a line, we would love to accommodate you with a listing!

    Comment

This antique dress has been carefully looked after and is in excellent condition for its age. Remember this dress is over ninety years old and has no major flaws that I can see other than a couple of tiny breaks in the tulle . Shown over a red chemise  for demonstration purposes only.

The dress hem is now much more even than shown in  the photographs. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

    Comment

Incredible 1920s cape/jacket with the most exquisite beadwork. It is in fantastic condition for its age with only some very minor missing beadwork in a few places and a small hole to the exterior at the hem edge in the centre of a floral decoration. There are also a few tiny holes and separations to the interior lining. These issues are relatively minor when one considers the age and rarity of the piece.

    Comment

Incredible 1920s robe with the most exquisite ribbon work roses decoration. This rare robe presents beautifully with some slight fading and colour variation to the velvet, a couple of darker spots here and there, the lace panel has been backed with reinforcement netting as there was some separation in the lace. The repair work has been expertly done however. All in all, despite its minor flaws it is one of the best robes I have ever seen.

    Comment

Absolutely sumptuous 1920s dress in rarer larger size and very wearable. The fabric has a vibrant colour with no apparent fading and is very strong. Bead work is amazingly intricate with striking accents. Overall, the dress is in excellent condition...only minor issues to note are a couple of spots that are hard to notice unless inspecting closely. This has to be one of my most favourite 1920s dresses!

Dorothy O’Hara commenced her illustrious career in the fashion industry in the mid 1930s, working for various small dress manufacturers in Los Angeles. Some years later she was employed by Paramount Pictures as a studio costume designer. When the opportunity came a couple of years later to renew her contract, she was able to negotiate the ability to design clothes for personal clients concurrently with her work in the movies.  Subsequently she launched her first collection in 1945 for Arnold Constable, a high-end department store. Her specialty was in designing alluring dresses that accentuated the female figure. These were invariably afternoon, cocktail and evening dresses that fitted close to the body, often with loads of draping.  In 1953, she launched her first complete evening wear collection. She also designed the dresses in which the daughters of the Governor of California would meet Queen Elizabeth. Throughout the later 1950s, her work was prominently featured in both advertisements and editorials in the icons of fashion magazines: Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Sadly, Dorothy died in 1963 at the young age of 51.

This spectacular dress is a wonderful example of her work. It's packed with wonderful design elements including sensual draping, a flattering neckline, unusual floating back panels, a contrasting lace under bodice and last, but not least, a modern take on the hobble skirt of the 1910s. The dress is in  wonderful condition for its age with no flaws that I can see. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

    Novelty Necklaces

As plastics became more accessible during the late 1930s and onwards and because they could be moulded into the most elaborate shapes, these materials became very popular in jewellery making. They were also colourful and relatively cheap to produce, as opposed to the use of semi-precious stones, an important factor during the Depression and the second World War periods. Designs became more naturalistic, moving away from the earlier geometric shapes and sparkle. Contemporary jewellery makers drew inspiration from the natural world – flowers, feathers, birds and fruits were all popular themes.

    Bakelite

The most expensive of the available plastics was bakelite. Bakelite jewellery featured in many of the USA's high-end department stores such as Bloomingdales, Saks, Lord & Taylor and Macy's. The jewellery of this era is now highly collectible.

Starting in 1951 Gloria Swanson was associated with the company. In 1965 company president Karl Rosen and employee Paul Young started their Youthquake line in an effort to attract younger buyers. This led to the founding of Paraphernalia, a boutique for the young and mod. In 1977 Purtitan approached Calvin Klein with a plan to license jeans under his name. Five years later Klein bought the company. (courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild)

    Mr Mort

Mr. Mort was founded in 1952 by Mortimer Goldman. The ready-to-wear company was based on 7th Avenue, New York and produced mid-priced but very fashionable dresses. Stan Herman, who had worked as a designer at various other clothing companies, was appointed the head designer at Mr. Mort in 1959. Herman’s designs were at the cutting edge of fashion - he was one of the first to show dresses over pants. During his career, Herman won three Coty Fashion Awards and was also awarded the Geoffrey Beane Lifetime Achievement Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Mr Mort ceased production in the early 1980s. All of the Mr Mort dresses I have owned have been very striking in their design and utilised high quality heavy cotton material.

    Comment

This dress has had a previous life but nevertheless presents beautifully. As a result, it does display a small amount of wear. There is a slight abrasion on the left side of dress (pictured) also some small colour blemishes here and there and alterations (as shown on side seam in last photograph). In my opinion, the alterations are only noticeable if you look for them, the blemish on the side could be reinforced if required and completely hidden by a ribbon. (For information, the ribbon shown in the photographs hangs on the opposite side of the flaw). Any other minor colour blemishes are hidden by the design and not readily noticed. The price reflects these flaws but it remains a wonderful and spectacular dress.

Shown with a crinoline and ribbon which are not included.

    Comment

This dress presents beautifully as can be seen with no major flaws. Fabric is crisp and strong. The only minor issue is that there is a small rust spot on metal zipper but not seen when dress is on

Shown with a crinoline which is not included. Some items may be pinned to the dress form to show shape.

    Comment

This vintage dress is in good condition for its age. While close to sixty years old. the dress has no major flaws that I can see only minor blemishes. A little bit of wear and tear is evident including some cracking to the circle paint here and there (a typical occurrence) a tiny bit of yellowing to a couple of the appliques, and a few tiny pin-point catches to the duster on the front bodice ...probably due to snagging of a piece of jewellery. These can be seen by zooming up on the photographs. Other than that, the dress presents beautifully as seen in the photos provided. This is a very versatile dress!!!

Shown with a crinoline and ribbons which are not included.

This vintage dress has been carefully looked after and is in excellent condition for its age. It has no noticeable flaws that I can see other than a tiny bit of seam stress at front waist.

Shown with a crinoline for presentation purposes only.
