As plastics became more accessible during the late 1930s and due to the fact that they could be moulded into elaborate shapes, they were ideal for jewellery making. As well as being colourful, they were relatively cheap compared to semi-precious stones - an important factor during the Depression and Second World War. Designs also became more naturalistic, moving away from the earlier geometric shapes. Jewellery designers of this period drew their inspiration from the natural world – flowers, feathers, birds and fruits were popular themes.
The most expensive of the available plastics was bakelite. Bakelite jewellery featured in many of the USA's high-end department stores such as Bloomingdales, Saks, Lord & Taylor and Macy's. The jewellery of this era is now highly collectible.
Lovely detailed necklace with gorgeous lace leaves - all components intact and in excellent condition. Slight wear to the box clasp as can be expected from a necklace over 70 years of age. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.
