Luis Estévez was born in Cuba in 1930. Following a brief sojourn at the luxury department store, Lord & Taylor, he decided to make fashion his career, enrolling at the Traphagen School of Fashion. Upon graduation, he lfet for Paris to work for the iconic Patou fashion house for two years. In 1955 he began designing under his own name at Grenelle-Estévez, a venture that lasted until 1968. He also designed swimwear for Sea Darlings in the 1960s and 1970s and men’s wear for Jaymar in the 1970s. In 1972, he began designing under a label for actress Eva Gabor while, at the same time, working for Universal Studios. In 1977, Estévez began accepting commissions from private clients, many of whom were Hollywood stars. His specialties were form-fitting cocktail and evening dresses, made with striking necklines that “cross, scoop, drape and cling to form tricky geometric patterns on the wearer’s shoulders. He retired from designing in 1997.
