Description
* Late 1950s seafoam green cocktail dress
* Classic silhouette with a defined waist and wide skirt
* Sleeveless bodice with straps
* Shelf bust with built-in cummerbund decorated with sequins and beads
* Skirt is very full with two additional underlayers consisting of tulle and taffeta
* Left shoulder has a long attached shawl that can be styled various ways
* Finished seams, back metal zipper, and added calico lining in bodice
* Label reads Continentals
The California Dress Company was a well-known British label that had its dress designs executed by a team of designers based in Los Angeles. The director, Louis Rawlings, was convinced that clothes intended mainly to be worn in sunshine had to be dreamed up in sunlight. The actual fabric and dresses, however, were made in Great Britain. They also had a novel gimmick. In co-operation with Max Factor Cosmetics, a colour chart for lipstick and make-up was attached to each dress. This suggested the ideal tone of lipstick to wear with a particular dress colour, along with the make-up base and powder tones suitable for blondes, brunettes or redheads. It is unknown if such a label accompanied this dress. The California label was mainly known for its bright, cotton dresses but it also made stunning evening wear such as this beauty. Excellent condition for its age.
No notable flaws that I can see - couple of spots on the calico bodice lining, nothing significant
