Tabak was one of the great California sportswear companies of the mid 20th century. During most of the 1950s and 1960s, the head designer at Tabak was Irene Saltern. Irene Saltern was the design name of Irene Stern Salinger. She designed for the movies in the 1930s and 1940s and in the 1950s she became head designer for California sportswear house: Tabak,   She designed under her own name in 1955-57. She returned to Tabak and stayed with them until 1965. A cutting-edge designer, she is widely credited as a pioneer in the California sportswear/separates revolution in the 1950s.
