Description

* Vintage late 1950s designer dress

* Body of dress is inky black velvet, with elbow-length sleeves and full skirt

* Cream satin is used to create a shawl collar with tails that reach almost to the hem of the dress

* Tails are fringed

* Cream satin also edges the cuffs and there is an inset piece in bodice

* Black buttons at sleeve ciffs

    * Complicated construction with press studs secure the front

    * Full skirt with extra wide self-belt

    * Crinoline net petticoat is secured at waist

    * Label reads Suzy Perette, New York

     

    The Suzy Perette label was a registered trademark of Lombardy Dress (founded as Lombardy Frocks in 1930) and registered in 1954. This popular mid-Century clothing brand made affordable high quality ready-to-wear apparel. A sister label to Suzy Perette was Gigi Young Fashions label (late fifties to 1966). This label followed the same successful style formula of Suzy Perette but as a less expensive line.

    Suzy Perette was greatly influenced by Parisian fashions featuring the New Look silhouette of a cinched waist and full skirt. In fact, Suzy Perette entered into a business arrangement with the House of Dior to acquire the rights to duplicate and adapt Christian Dior's designs into their own product range - of which this dress must surely be an outstanding example.

    Condition 

    No notable flaws.  Fabulous condition for its age.

    Please note that these are vintage items with a previous life, so minor signs of wear are almost inevitable. These signs could include previous alterations, repairs, frays, minor stitch defects or small marks. But please, don't expect the item to be in pristine unworn condition - unless otherwise stated.

    This is a high-quality and sophisticated cocktail dress. It certainly appears to be an adapted Dior Design for which Suzy Perette held the licence to replicate in the USA. It certainly is one of the most striking Suzy Perette dresses I have had the pleasure of owning,
