Frederick’s of Hollywood was established in 1946 by Frederick Mellinger. His first store opened in 1947 on Hollywood Boulevard, and he also sold by mail order. Mellinger intended to bring a sexier look to American lingerie, somewhat along the lines of what he had seen in Europe during the war. His association with Hollywood boosted the image of the company, which in the 1940s was responsible for such lingerie innovations as the padded and push-up bras. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Fredericks placed ads in the backs of magazines, and mail order was a very large part of the business. The catalogs and stores added glamorous evening wear, much of it designed by Mr. Frederick himself. The garments featured daring necklines, high slits, and sheer fabrics intended to appeal to men as much as women. In fact, Mellinger once wrote that his goal was to offer "the most alluring, body-hugging, figure-enhancing outer fashions ... always aimed at men." During the 1980s, a move was made to downplay the overtly sexy look of the advertising and the lingerie itself, as Frederick’s went mainstream and opened up in shopping malls across America. Condition

Absolutely stunning and figure hugging cocktail dress with such an eye-catching neckline. Whilst Mr Mellinger may have said that his designs were aimed to appeal to men, they (more importantly) ticked all the boxes for women in the first instance. It's fair to say that confident, sophisticated women were his niche market. And this dress is an excellent example of that appeal. As far as condition is concerned, this dress is free from notable flaws and presents spectacularly.  Cleaned and ready to wear.
