Alex Colman California, founded in 1947, was one of many California clothing companies that opened post World War II period. The family-owned company  specialised in quality sportswear, coordinates, and casual dress in the Californian style. The vivid and unique prints used by Alex Colman became their signature and set the standard. These prints were all designed by Blanche Lefton (Alex Coleman's daughter), who was inspired by her many trips to France, Germany and Italy. She would then visit Japan to personally work on her exclusive patterns with their printers: Kanebo and Toyobo. Blanche was an expert at engineering prints so that the borders would match perfectly. The ability of the company to produce these exclusive prints was one of the primary reasons for its success. In 1968, it had grown so much that it was listed on the stock exchange and in 1973 merged with Borden Incorporated. Sometime in 1980, the company finally closed its doors. Their legacy has endured, particularly the classic Coleman border and floral novelty prints of the 1950s. Examples of these are highly valued by today's vintage fashion connoisseurs.

Condition

This dress is in great vintage condition, other than the hemline being altered. This has resulted in an uneven hemline which has been fixed by my seamstress. The dress hem is now much more even than shown in  the photographs. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.
