Jean Patou (1887-1936) opened his first design house, Parry, in 1912. Two years later he reformed the company under his own name, but was forced to leave it in the care of his family while he was deployed during WWI. He was back in business after the war and in 1919 the House of Patou began in earnest. His clothes were sporty and youthful and they were a big success both in France and in the United States. He not only designed dresses, but also true sportswear such as tennis dresses, ski ensembles, and bathing suits.

In 1924 Patou travelled to the US and when he returned to Paris he took with him six American models. The American trade was an important part of his business and the models were to assure a good fit on the taller American figure, and to attract more US buyers. In 1929 Patou lowered hemlines and moved the waist back to its natural position and the rest of the fashion world soon followed suit.

Patou died in 1936 and the house was then directed by his brother-in-law, Raymond Barbas. Since then there has been a considerable amount of talent at the house of Patou: including Marc Bohan 1953-1957, Mad Carpentier 1958-1960, Karl Lagerfeld 1960-1963, and Christian LeCroix 1982-87. The last clothing collection was in 1987, and since that time Patou has produced perfumes. (Courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild)

    Condition

    Mostly excellent.

The only issues I can see are a couple tiny pinhole repairs on back of the dress that are hardly noticeable and. couple of pinpricks. Both near the zipper and honestly you would never know unless pointed out. There are a couple of holes in the lining of the cape but again not noticed when wearing and does not affect the durability or presentation of this sensational outfit.

Please note that these are vintage items that have been used and loved over the years, As such, they may display slight evidence of their age. Any notable flaws above and beyond this will be highlighted here.

Magnificent and highly-collectable Space Age dress and coat ensemble by the renowned fashion label Jean Patou. It is likely Karl Lagerfeld was the design of this ensemble. It truly is an incredible piece. Please drop us a line if you require additional information about this listing.

    Lilli Ann
This famous American label was registered in 1933 by Adolf Schuman. Fabrics were specially imported from France and Italy, many made expressly for Lilli Ann. These fabrics were bought from mainly small textile companies that were in dire financial straits after the war and in danger of closing. As a result, Schuman was credited with saving many of these from financial ruin and in official recognition for his services was awarded Medals of Honour from both France and Italy.  On the other hand, the Lilli Ann customer knew that their suits, coats and dresses were made of the highest quality, hand-loomed fabric. Lilli Ann was also recognised for its innovative designs and quality construction. The label received the Gold Medal in Fashion Design, America's highest award in fashion. Nowadays, there is very high demand for this label from collectors and fashionistas from around the world. It must be said that this label is one of my all-time favourites as many of my customers know...:)

Love this ensemble, especially the geometric inserts that really make it stand out. Beautifully finished too!  It's becoming increasingly difficult to source these ensembles, especially in this condition. Please drop us a line if you require additional information about this listing.

Good figural handbag are getting harder to find. This frog shape is particularly endearing and he boasts loads of attitude.  I've only had one other, identical to this but with green eyes. I think the red really stands out.  Please drop us a line if you require additional information about this listing.

Prior to the 1960s, Pucci's worked under his earlier company,  Emilio of Capri. Comment

Emilio Pucci was the king of textile innovative and beautiful prints during the 1960's. His designs revolutionized the world of fashion and developed a cult following that was almost unheard of at the time. Today, original Pucci prints from the beginning of his career are hard-to-find and highly collectible. This stunning multi-coloured print silk-jersey dress is a perfect example of his genius. Don Loper
Don Loper had a number of professions before he came to costume design - he was a dancer, choreographer, actor, director, costume and set designer. In 1946, he opened a sophisticated couture dress salon on Sunset Boulevard. The lavishly appointed salon showcased a bevy of magnificent gowns, cocktail dresses, suits, dresses and coats - all with hugely expensive price tags.  His designs, which embodied the chic elegance of the period, were very much prized by Hollywood's elite movie stars and by socialites alike. So much so that Lucille Ball, in her hit TV show I Love Lucy dedicated an entire episode to the designer. Today, Don Loper designs often come with hefty price tags, especially the earlier ones. As with Lilli Ann, one can usually spot a Don Loper original by the look, design and cut.

Please note that these are vintage items that have been used and loved over the years, As such, they may display slight evidence of their age. Any notable flaws above and beyond this will be highlighted here.

    Comment

The fabric in this ensemble is absolutely amazing. It's a thick, textured knit with some stitching raised above the rest. I've tried to capture this in the close-up photo. The design is clean with the typical desirable features of the period: shorter length, wide lapel collars, streamlined silhouette. It's so eye-catching too!! Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if you require additional information about this listing.

    California Cottons
Very little information is available on the history of this label. Research indicates that the label probably originated in the United States but was heavily marketed within in the United Kingdom. During the 1950s and1960s however, the manufacturing was done exclusively in Britain, with the actual design work outsourced to the United States. The clothing from this label is very eye-catching and beautifully detailed - to the extent where California Cottons matches the quality and styling of Horrockses Fashions. While its history may be a little vague, its collectability is not. The label is highly prized today. (Thanks to Liz at Advantage in Vintage)

Mr Blackwell was renowned for his flamboyant yet classic designs styled for women with confidence. He told the Los Angeles Times in the 1960s that designers were forgetting that their job 'was to dress and enhance women'.  He quickly established himself as an important fashion designer and during the 1960s he became the first in history to present his line on a television broadcast. In addition, he was the first to make his line available for plus-size women.  His designer dresses sold for over $1,000 and were keenly sought-after. During the nearly two-decade existence of the 'House of Blackwell', he was designer to such stars as Yvonne de Carlo, Jayne Mansfield, Dorothy Lamour, Jane Russell and California first lady Nancy Reagan. Perhaps, nowadays he is equally remembered for his Worst Dressed Lists, complete with biting commentary. The first "Ten Worst-Dressed Women" list premiered in 1960, to moderate media success, but as the House of Blackwell became more successful, the list took off.  By its third year, every television and radio network and virtually all news services worldwide began to cover it. In 1997, a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs, California, Walk of Stars was dedicated to him.

I only know this as I worked there in 1975. They used to source models from the London College of Fashion, Mr Billings always said that their girls knew how to walk properly!  They operated a factory in Italy where their designs came to life.” Pierre Balmain in Paris also supplied his models to Jean Allen designer House in London.

    Vicki Vaughn

Vicky Vaughn was the junior division of R & M Kaufmann, Inc in Aurora, Illinois.  The Kaufman brothers began making ladies dresses in the 1920s. They built their business by producing high quality but moderately priced dresses and sleepwear.  The company was able to keep prices low by mass producing garments in their own factories.  In fact, their motto was "Only the LOOK is expensive."  Sales grew steadily through the use of full page advertisements in Seventeen, Mademoiselle and Charm magazines as well as the use of live television commercials on shows such as "Beat the Clock."  The Kaufmann's also produced the Toni Todd line for misses sizes.  The company was sold to Russ Togs in 1969.

    Condition

Absolutely stunning novelty print dress with a fabulous tulip border. The bodice is amazing with so many features. It obviously was a quality dress as the contemporary advertisement shows.  It's in excellent condition too, looks hardly worn. Unfortunately missing the cute belt featured in the photo. Condition

This is such a lovely dress, with so many design features. The bodice in particular is so flattering. In real life, the dress is a smidge lighter than the photographs show but I found it difficult to colour balance for some reason.  No notable flaws that I can see, apart from the dress might need the cotton thread that forms the hook and eye reinforced. Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

It must be said that this label is one of my all-time favourites as many of my friends know...:)

    Condition

Gorgeous colour on this coat, it's a soft baby blue. Of course, with a Lilli Ann label you know you're getting quality fabric and high - end construction. But I must add with this coat, there are really lovely design aspects that I love -  including the rolled collar with bow and the deep darting on the upper back. The condition is excellent, with no notable flaws that I can see. No moth holes or damage, perhaps an occasional sparse strand of mohair as is typical with this fabric over time. Really presents beautifully. It's so clean it looks hardly worn in fact.  Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

Nowadays, there is very high demand for this label from collectors and fashionistas from around the world. It must be said that this label is one of my all-time favourites as many of my customers know...:)

The label remains popular today for anyone who appreciates an alluring feminine silhouette.

    Suzy Perette

A sister label to Suzy Perette was the Gigi Young Fashions label (late fifties to 1966). This label followed the same successful style formula of Suzy Perette but as a less expensive line.

Suzy Perette was greatly influenced by Parisian fashions, with the silhouette of cinched waist and full skirt extremely popular in the early fifties. In fact, the Suzy Perette label acquired the right to incorporate Christian Dior's designs into their own product range- and this dress is a wonderful example!

A signature feature of their finest model was an attached gold plated pocket watch. Since the 1960s, this over-100-year-old corporation has been run by the three generations of Mr. Lederer’s followers. The brand has changed ownership several times, yet still remains in operation worldwide as a distinguished maker of very fine leather goods.

    Condition

Such an unusual colour in this handbag, although I believe it to be a very versatile one. It should blend beautifully with navy, black, greens and browns.  No notable flaws that I can see, other than a pen mark internally at the base of the handbag, and a couple of small marks to the exterior but hardly worth mentioning. No nicks or peeling skin.  Conditioned and ready to use. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.
