    Toni Todd

R & M Kaufmann, Inc was inaugurated in Aurora, Illinois during the 1900s. The owners were brothers who produced high quality but moderately priced dresses and sleepwear. They were able to keep prices low by mass producing garments in their own factories.  In fact, their motto was "Only the LOOK is expensive."  Sales grew steadily through the use of full page advertisements in SeventeenMademoiselle and Charm magazines as well as the use of live television commercials on shows such as "Beat the Clock."  The Kaufmann's produced under several labels including the Toni Todd line which specifically targeted younger women.  The company was sold to Russ Togs in 1969.

    Condition

This is such a lovely dress, with so many design features. The bodice in particular is so flattering. In real life, the dress is a smidge lighter than the photographs show but I found it difficult to colour balance for some reason.  No notable flaws that I can see, apart from the dress might need the cotton thread that forms the hook and eye reinforced. Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

    Lilli Ann
This famous American label was registered in 1933 by Adolf Schuman. Fabrics were specially imported from France and Italy, many made expressly for Lilli Ann. These fabrics were bought from mainly small textile companies that were in dire financial straits after the war and in danger of closing. As a result, Schuman was credited with saving many of these from financial ruin and in official recognition for his services was awarded Medals of Honour from both France and Italy.  On the other hand, the Lilli Ann customer knew that their suits, coats and dresses were made of the highest quality, hand-loomed fabric. Lilli Ann was also recognised for its innovative designs and quality construction. The label received the Gold Medal in Fashion Design, America's highest award in fashion. Nowadays, there is very high demand for this label from collectors and fashionistas from around the world. It must be said that this label is one of my all-time favourites as many of my friends know...:)

    Condition

Gorgeous colour on this coat, it's a soft baby blue. Of course, with a Lilli Ann label you know you're getting quality fabric and high - end construction. But I must add with this coat, there are really lovely design aspects that I love -  including the rolled collar with bow and the deep darting on the upper back. The condition is excellent, with no notable flaws that I can see. No moth holes or damage, perhaps an occasional sparse strand of mohair as is typical with this fabric over time. Really presents beautifully. It's so clean it looks hardly worn in fact.  Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

The label remains popular today for anyone who appreciates an alluring feminine silhouette.

    Condition

This dress is in excellent condition with no rips, stains, major fading or holes. The only issue of note is that there are a couple of missing teeth in the metal zipper but it does not appear to impede opening or closure. Priced accordingly. This is a spectacular dress and really looks like a dress Marilyn Monroe would have worn back in the early 1960s. It's black,  figure hugging, brimming with sparkling sequins and made by Emma Domb ...what more could you ask?

A sister label to Suzy Perette was the Gigi Young Fashions label (late fifties to 1966). This label followed the same successful style formula of Suzy Perette but as a less expensive line.

Suzy Perette was greatly influenced by Parisian fashions, with the silhouette of cinched waist and full skirt extremely popular in the early fifties. In fact, the Suzy Perette label acquired the right to incorporate Christian Dior's designs into their own product range- and this dress is a wonderful example!

The Lederer company opened their first boutique in the US around 1939 in New York City at 711 Fifth Ave. Prior to that, the company operated over twenty stores in Europe: including London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, and Budapest. Their specialties were upscaled alligator and crocodile satchels, as well as various exotic skins all meticulously handcrafted and finished. A signature feature of their finest model was an attached gold plated pocket watch. Since the 1960s, this over-100-year-old corporation has been run by the three generations of Mr. Lederer’s followers. The brand has changed ownership several times, yet still remains in operation worldwide as a distinguished maker of very fine leather goods.

    Condition

Such an unusual colour in this handbag, although I believe it to be a very versatile one. It should blend beautifully with navy, black, greens and browns.  No notable flaws that I can see, other than a pen mark internally at the base of the handbag, and a couple of small marks to the exterior but hardly worth mentioning. No nicks or peeling skin.  Conditioned and ready to use. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

    Frank Usher
Opened for business in 1946 in London, the company’s specialty was to bring high end detailing and 'fresh off the runway' inspirations at a moderate price range. This excerpt from Woman and Beauty Magazine 1961 says it all: " A passion for perfection in all the elegant clothes which bear the Frank Usher label. Once upon a time, a girl who yearned for a fabulous gown either had to part with her lifetime’s savings- or settle down to sew one herself. Not so today. Since Frank Usher came onto the fashion scene, any girl with a grand occasion ahead can buy a spectacular dress or ball gown, at a cost which won’t wreck a modest piggy bank. Maybe this is the quality that makes Frank Usher dresses outstanding". More recently, the company went into receivership in 2001, was sold to management, and was then purchased by the Simma Corporation. The Usher warehouse and distribution plant was moved from London to Stoke to streamline operations. Currently, the company produces four different collections of evening wear and versatile separates: Frank Usher, Dusk, Coterie, and Bridal.

    Condition

The fabric is of high quality, as is the construction. The dress itself looks hardly worn, in excellent condition and free from flaws. Truly a gorgeous dress! The details in the bodice front and back are exquisite and lift it out of the ordinary. You certainly won't be disappointed ! Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

    Guy Laroche

Laroche was born in La Rochelle and began his career in milinery. From 1949, Laroche worked for Jean Desses,  eventually becoming his assistant. In 1955, he visited the U.S. to investigate new ready to wear manufacturing methods and subsequently founded his high-fashion atelier at 37 Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, Paris. In his first collection he reintroduced vibrant colours such as pink, orange, coral, topaz, and turquoise. His clothes also featured plunging neck and back lines. Known as being humble and gracious—as opposed to the haughty nature of most Parisian designers—he designed haute-couture, but practical clothing for women. For the American market, he was one of the first to create separates. Along with the excellent workmanship throughout his garments he also resured that it designed for practical use. In 1961, he moved to larger quarters, a townhouse at 29 Avenue Montaigne Pais  and opened a boutique there .Guy Laroche died in Paris on 17 February 1989, at the age of 67.

    Chemise Dress

The Chemise was a more flattering derivation of The Sack dress. It similarly bypassed the waist, suggesting rather than defining the shape within. The fullness at the back was achieved by gathering loose pleats, inverted tucks or draped folds into fitted bands at either waist or hip level. The enthusiasm with which department stores and dress shops within Europe, US, Canada and Australasia embraced the chemise, saw the trend reach far beyond the main cities to smaller country centres. The one constant with the chemise dress was the full back. Other features differed according to the maker. Cole of California, of swimsuit fame, conceived the chemise as a sleeveless sunfrock in floral printed cotton. Short sleeves, cap sleeves, double cap sleeves and bell sleeves proved popular, as did button-through backs, drop-waisted tie belts (at the back) and contrasting front panels. Horrockses Cottons imagined the chemise as an elongated nautical-style middy with a  vertical collar and a V-neck culminating in a floppy bow. Necklines might be V, square, scooped, cowl or bateau, the latter running horizontally across the collar-bone, shoulder to shoulder. The bateau was used, to stunning effect, in the designs of the teen-dream American label Jonathon Logan. Here, Guy Laroche has  accentuated the back with  a gigantic floppy bow.In fact, it would be no exaggeration to say that designers of the chemise were bitten by the bow bug. The bow, was the decorative detail du jour. Strategically placed, back and front, on dropped waist-bands, shoulders and necklines, its flatness suited the chemise’s angular lines. The fabrics most favoured for chemise dresses and suits were mainly cotton, satin or silk as they were those soft enough to facilitate back blousing or draping . Woollen materials and French silk velvets were often selected for coats. Its heyday in fashion did not last long, it was quickly superseded by the next fad to hit the worldwide fashion market -  the Trapeze dress. The Sack, the Chemise and the Trapeze provoked comment and excited the imagination in equal measure. But their most significant contribution to fashion was that they were catalysts for change. (Courtesy of Cecilie Geary for the New Zealand Fashion Museum)

L’Aiglon was founded in 1919 in Philadelphia,  as part of Biberman Brothers, Inc. Biberman's previous clothing lines were labelled Biberman Make and their focus was on producing easy care house dresses or washable dresses (referred to back then as tubable). They also made bathrobes and uniforms for maids and nurses.  When the L’Aiglon label became operational, the company expanded its clothing lines to make inexpensive but stylish dresses for women and juniors (the latter under the Jeanne D’Arc label). After WW2 , the company further expanded to take advantage of the post-war economic boom and the rising demand for couture and high fashion items. It focused its production on casual dresses that could be "worn and loved by women in every income bracket from the mink and mansion set to the budget and bungalow crowd." Also during the 1950s,  L’Aiglon dresses were used as costumes for the popular soap opera: The Edge of Night. Around that time, the average L'Aiglon dress sold for around $30 which, according to today's prices would be $250. Despite over 70 years of success L’Aiglon was forced out of business by 1976.  Like many other apparel companies they couldn’t compete with cheaper imported clothing.

    Condition

A dress guaranteed to make you happy!! The colour is absolutely gorgeous and the pattern is delightful. It's also un excellent condition for its age, free from any notable flaws. The hem has dropped and I was loathe to hem it back, as the desired length depends so much on the height of the wearer and their individual preference.  Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

    Condition

How captivating is this dress! And so versatile, as it allows for a multitude of accessories. Here I have added a blue bow and corsage. Another alternative, would be to pin little forget me nots or violets to the appliques on the border and bust. But it really stands up on its own, both figuratively and literally!!  In fact it's so beautiful it would make a gorgeous wedding dress. The condition is excellent for its age, with no notable flaws that I can see. Smallest amount of light yellowing to the organdie trim and tulle in a couple of places but nothing of real consequence. Most likely this will lift completely with hand laundering. In this instance, I didn't launder it personally due to the horrible weather we have been experiencing of late. It's been dry cleaned instead, Sitting it in the sun to dry quickly really is the best whitening agent Please drop us a line if you require additional information about this listing.

    Condition

This is such a lovely dress, simple yet striking. Being deadstock, the fabric is crisp and strong and the colours remain vibrant. In fact,  it looks as if it travelled in a time machine as it's in such good condition. Absolutely no flaws that I can see, othher than a pin dot rust mark where the pin was that attached the swing tag under the armscye. Please note, I haven't laundered the dress as I wanted to  preserve the original presentation for its new owner. I'am sure the marks can be lifted but they are so tiny the size of a pin (entry and exit point). Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

    Rappi
I haven't been able to find a great deal about this label although I know it is very much sought after by collectors for the fabulous designs. All the Rappi dresses I have owned have been exceptional, as is this particular example. Thanks to Couture Allure Vintage Fashion Blog I discovered that the driving force behind the label was Viennese born, Syd Rappaport. She was noted for her high end ready to wear cocktail and evening fashions on par with Ceil Chapman and Malcom Star.

It must be said that this label is one of my all-time favourites as many know...:)

    BIBA LABEL
Biba did not label their clothing until 1968. Until that time the clothing had only a tiny white size label with with the size printed in red. The Biba font was designed by John McConnell in 1968.  This label was woven and not printed. It was used from 1968 around the launch of the first catalogue and it phased out in early 1971. In 1970 the font was slimmed down, as when they first tried to reduce the logo for printing on the new cosmetics range the original font couldn’t be read, so it was slimmed down especially for printing and then used on garment labels and other products as well to keep the label uniform. In 1971 all labels became printed (gold on black and later black on gold) (courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild).

    Condition

Genuine vintage late 1960s Military style coat by iconic British fashion label, BIBA. The coat dates around 1968, when Biba was still a small boutique and not the huge department store it became in the 1970s. It is in excellent condition overall. Two things worth noting are that the buttons are replacements but a great selection for the coat and very similar to the originals and there is the tiniest bit of wear on the buckle. Both minor issues in my opinion but I have priced the coat to reflect this. Really a wonderful example from the period when London set the fashion scene. Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.

    Matelasse
Matelassé is a weaving or stitching technique yielding a pattern that appears quilted or padded. Matelassé may be achieved by hand, on a jacquard loom or a quilting machine. It is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched quilts made in France. It is a luxurious textile that appears to be padded, but actually has no padding within the fabric.

    Description

    * Vintage 1960s ivory net party dress

    * Decorated with multiple rows of iridescent MOP sequins

    * Classic silhouette with cinched slightly dropped waist and full skirt

    * Sleeveless bodice with band collar and sheer illusion neckline

    * Ivory crepe underskirt with scooped out sleeveless bodice and plunging back

    * Upper bodice lined in sheer organza

    * Cream taffeta lining and working back nylon zipper

    * Label reads Blum's Vogue

    Blum's Vogue

The dress carries a Blum's Vogue Chicago designer label, a high end designer store. Blum's dressed Chicago's most fashionable women for decades. For forty years, Harry Blum, owner of Blum's Vogue would travel to Paris every season to select the fashions for his store. Blum carried designer notables such as: Dior, Chanel, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Mme Gres. He would also carry American designer labels such as, Norell, Trigere, Ben Zuckerman, Galanos, Werle, Ceil Chapman, etc. Unfortunately, as this dress only carries the Blum's Vogue label, I cannot be certain of the individual designer.

    Condition

This outstanding dress is in excellent vintage condition for its age. No major flaws that I can see, but there are some splits to the organza lining underneath the netting at the back of the dress, more than likely hanger damage. The organza lining could be replaced if desired or left as is as the splits cannot be seen from the exterior of the dress.  There are a couple of light marks on the underneath lining material which do not show up at all on the crepe underskirt or net outer skirt. I must highlight the construction of this dress, which is definitely high-end and impeccably finished. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.
