Pierre Cardin Space Age
Sci-fi is not merely a literary genre, or just a part of film culture and history, it also takes pride of place in the evolution of modern clothing design. Its imagery not only interprets a vision that transcends gender, it constantly reinvents itself on the catwalk - even up to the present day. The Space Age itself began with man's race to the moon in the 1960s but was soon adopted into mainstream fashion heralding a highly innovative era particularly amongst the top young French couturiers. The movement was led by Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne and André Courrèges. Their styles were designed with ruler and compass and often featured geometric cuts in white or silver fabrics, flashy synthetic neon prints and eye-popping metal hardware, buttons and discs. This avant-garde style was soon copied all over the world – well before man actually landed on the moon. Cardin, who undoubtedly led the charge, with an almost magical ability to see into the future, stated: “The clothes I prefer were invented for a life that does not yet exist”. Perhaps that future has finally arrived!! Not only are original Space Age fashions pieces highly collectable from a historical and artistic perspective, they also remain as fresh and current as the day they were first introduced. Not many earlier eras of clothing can blend as seamlessly with today's fashions than these futuristic beauties.
This beautiful coat is in excellent vintage condition for its age. It is clean, without any marks, the colour is vibrant and unfaded and all hardware is present. The only issue that I can see is that there are a couple of inconspicuous moth bites in the lower hemline and one of the left arm. Whilst the one on the arm area is a little more noticeable, they are only light grazes and not actually holed. Hardly noticeable when worn however.
