Sue Brett Inc was established in August 1947 by Jack Baker, after trading under his own name for just over a year. He decided to change the name as people confused it with another Jack Baker also in the dress trade at that time. He chose Sue Brett, derived from the French “soubrette,” a theatrical term for a vivacious, flirty girl.  After all, his primary market for this label was the younger woman. Jack Baker built Sue Brett into one of the key labels for popular-priced dresses during the Fifties, Sixties, and Seventies. Its lines were available at such major stores as Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, Dayton’s, Hudson’s, Marshall Field’s, and Ohrbach’s.  Based on 7th Avenue, New York, the company had grown so large by the 1960s that it required additional capacity in other parts of New York State and Pennsylvania. Sue Brett Inc owned a 160, 000‐square‐foot warehousing center in Secaucus, N.J., where merchandise was inventoried and from which shipments were made. In addition to its showroom and headquarters in New York.,Sue Brett has offices in Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Charlotte, N.C. It ceased to operate by the mid-1980s.
