William Travilla (1920-1990) began his career as a designer working in the movies during the 1940s. As a costume designer, he is probably remembered most for the designs he did for Marilyn Monroe, including the “subway grate” dress from The Seven Year Itch.

In the early 1950s he began his own label, designing for the public as well as for the stars. He worked through the 1950s and 1960s, making elegant, but comfortable clothing. In 1970, he closed shop and moved to Spain, but resumed his label in 1977. He continued to design until his death in 1990, including designs for the Dallas television program starting in 1985. Condition

This rare and collectable gown is is in excellent condition for its age.  No notable flaws that I can see, apart from a couple of loose threads on neckline. For the 1950s movie, Travilla made three versions of the dress: one plain, one with buttons and one with bows. This version of the Marilyn gown, with a bow, was said to be both Travilla's and Marilyn's favourite. Although the gown with buttons if featured in later publicity shots, its unknown which version was used in the actual movie. Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.
