* Label reads Edith Small California

Edith Small was well known in her day, receiving both East, as well as West Coast newspaper coverage, for her collections. Although originally from Chicago, she opened her clothing house in Los Angeles, California in 1945. Edith Small was recognized for her feminine suits and gowns. She worked with high quality fabrics, including French and Italian imports.

While there were certainly California designers and manufacturers in the 1940s and 1950s who achieved both national followings in their day and the enduring status of major American designer ( Adrian, Irene, Galanos, Howard Greer, etc), there were many who, although highly respected in their working years, have faded from prominence over the years. Edith Small should be equally espected today for her quality designs as she was in her time.

Edith Small died in 1965 at the age of 60, and her workshop went on to produce for Bert Geiger. (courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild).

Condition

Excellent vintage condition.

No notable flaws that I can see. - a couple of missing rhinestones on the edge of the neckline and the bottom flounce. There may be others but honestly I didn't notice.  Can be easily replaced if desired. Some discoloration to several embroidered fronds but hardly noticeable. Would benefit a dry clean. For all its added embellishments, this beauty is in remarkably good condition for its age.

Please note that these are vintage items that have been used and loved over the years, As such, they may display slight evidence of their age. Any notable flaws will be highlighted.

Comment

An absolutely stunning cocktail dress with so much attention to detail, including the multiple built-in petticoats on this beauty.

The listing is for the dress only and does not include any other accessories that may have been photographed with the item.

This item has not been pinned to the dress form.
