* Late 1950s to early 1960s high-grade cotton dress and matching bolero

* Fabric design features white daisies and green leaves on a sky blue background

* Classic silhouette with a fitted waist and gathered skirt

* Dress bodice is sleeveless with thin straps and chemise neckline

* Skirt is moderately full with matching self-fabric belt

* Matching bolero with short sleeves that can be tied under the bust

* Back metal zipper

* Deadstock with original swing tags

* Bodice of dress is lined and boned

* Label reads Horrockses Fashions

Horrockses was founded in 1791 in Preston, UK as a cotton manufacturer. In 1946 the company started Horrockses Fashions Limited and the Horrockses label was born. The clothing was designed in London, using the cotton that was produced by the Horrockses Mill in Preston. Most of their garments were made from their cotton, but they also used other fibres from other makers.

During the 1950s, Horrockses was famous for their colourful cotton floral prints, which were made into full-skirted summer dresses. These dresses were popular not only in Britain but they were also imported into the US, where they could be found at upscale stores such as B. Altman. The dresses, even though they were only cotton day dresses, were not cheap and were very well made. The company worked at improving the image of cotton and they were very successful. The company’s top designers left in 1958 and the company was sold to Steinberg & Sons in 1964. The label was discontinued in 1983. Courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild

Condition

Excellent vintage condition.

No notable flaws that I can see. The cotton is crisp and the colours are vibrant and unfaded. As it is deadstock I have not laundered the dress as I didn't want to remove the original tags - there are a couple of light marks that will easily lift when laundered.

Please note that these are vintage items that have been used and loved over the years, As such, they may display slight evidence of their age. Any notable flaws will be highlighted here.

My goodness is this a rare piece. It's one thing to find a Horrockses dress that appears to not have been previously worn, but this is the first and only time I have come across one with the original swing tags. Please drop us a line if you require additional information about this listing.

Postage
We make every effort to post your item within 1-3 days of payment. Should a circumstance arise where we are unable to post within this timeframe (eg we are away at a fair) we will contact you immediately. Please note that our postage charges are based on standard international and domestic air packages - all with tracking. If you want to upgrade to express postage or require insurance, please contact us prior to checkout and we will adjust the rates accordingly.

Availability

LayBys/Layaways

Alterations
Obviously, as these are one-off pieces, the fit may not be quite what you need. To this end, we also offer an alteration service by professional seamstresses. Please shoot us an email outlining what you want and we will quickly respond with a quote and timeframe. Costs are kept to a minimum for this service.
